Shortly before 12:15 a.m. on Oct. 16, members of the Takoma Park Police Department were called to 7-Eleven in the 900 block of Merrimac Drive, when a person reported that a 2018 black Ford Explorer was stolen moments after it was parked.

During the investigation into the stolen truck, police say that officers were notified of a crash that was reported in the area of Sligo Creek Parkway and Heather Avenue, where they found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames approximately 20 feet into the creek.

First responders were able to quickly extinguish the fire, though a search of the area for any victims or suspects came up empty.

No injuries were initially reported.

According to police, the vehicle torched in the crash matches the description of the stolen Ford Explorer taken from 7-Eleven.

The incident is now being investigated by the Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office and Maryland National Capital Park Police.
